When the judge refuses to formalise their separation, Simin departs the family home, leaving the obstinate Nader to hire a housekeeper. Razieh is a devout, impoverished woman who tends to the apartment and Nader's father. When Nader returns one day to find his father alone, it leads to an altercation that has unexpected consequences.
This film is one not to be missed. It has won a plethora of film awards with a script that explores the cultural, social and judical minefield that plagues contemporary Iran.

Facebook Tips & Tricks - Etsy Links

Promoting your Etsy, madeit or other online store is super easy via facebook and a great marketing tool. Choose the product that you wish to promote from you store and copy the website URL which is found at the very top of your web browser window. It will look like https://www....... You can also use the website URL for your online store instead of the one item.

Go to your facebook business page, at the top of your wall you will see ‘share’ followed by status, photo, link, video etc. Choose ‘link’. Click in the box that appears and paste your URL then click ‘attach’. You will then have the option to write something about your link for example “I have been listing some brand new stock online this morning, here is a little sneak peek”. When you are finished click ‘post’ and your link will appear on you wall.

We've been longtime supporters of the folk over at Reverse Garbage and are excited to be promoting the opening of their upcoming exhibition 'Trash Amour'!

Reverse Garbage celebrates the traditionally loved up month of February with a handmade, junky, art exhibition with a twist! Forget traditional flowers, teddy bears and chocolates, this exhibition will showcase romantic handmade objects with a bit of attitude and edge!

“Trash Amour challenged participants to draw inspiration from dark bold colours, Victorian and Edwardian styling, steam punk, retro pin ups, Carnivale and Moulin Rouge for their artworks” says Exhibition Co-ordinator Brooke Nelson.

Featuring the work of over 20 local artists, craftworkers and designers who work with salvaged materials, there will be a diverse range of items on display including fine artworks, jewellery, sculptural items, fashion accessories, cards, gorgeous home wares and more.

If you are unfamiliar with Jess's work you may like to pop over to her blog and read a little bit about her. She is one driven creative soul with entrepreneurial skills to boot. Here she shares her Top 10 Social Media Quick Tips.....

I've been using social media (such as Twitter, Facebook and Blogging) since 2008 to grow my indie business. In fact, I would go so far as to say that without social media, I wouldn't have been able to make the leap from hobby to business, and now be living my dream of working for myself full-time from home running my various crafty endeavours!

Social media has allowed me to spend time - not money- marketing and building my business. For those of us who are going it alone, saving money wherever we can is vital.
Today, I want to share 10 quick tips on how to successfully use social media to market your Etsy shop, and really help those sales numbers grow!

1. Start with one and enjoy it
There are so many different social media out there. It's easy to get overwhelmed if you're just starting out. Don't try to do it all at once! Sign up to a number of different social media sites and try them out, and then focus on the one you enjoy the most to begin with. You can spend time building your community on the other ones down the track.

2. Be consistent
The point of social media is to build trust and relationships with your customers. Keeping that in mind, they're going to get to know you a lot better if you're a constant presence. For example, when my online friends think about buying some silver jewellery, I want them to think of me! We like buying from friends, and social media allows us to build friendships all over the world. But the internet is a fickle place, where you're soon forgotten if you don't stay in the game.

3. You can share your listings... but in moderation
When they're just starting out, a lot of people make the mistake of *just* sharing their products. I can tell you now, no-one is going to pay any attention, because no-one likes being 'sold to'. Of course you can share your work, but it should be a small proportion of what you talk about.

4. Share other people's work
One of the most wonderful things about the craft community is the support we give each other. Help your fellow crafters out! Share their work on your blog, twitter, facebook, pinterest... It's a great way to build relationships with people, we're all appreciative when someone shows an interest in our work. Can you see the common thread here? Yep, it's all about the relationships.

5. Limit yourself
It is very, very easy to get sucked into the social media vortex. If you know you have work to do, but you keep getting distracted, use a timer and limit yourself. Or, set aside time twice a day to catch up. Don't let it get in the way of doing your actual work!

6. Set up a schedule
This pairs up with number 5 - if you're busy, spend a bit of time up-front to plan out your week, and the things you'd like to share on social media. That little bit of time spent planning will ensure you don't forget to share important things with your followers.

7. On twitter, use BufferApp
Another thing we sometimes tend to do is 'flood' our followers. We find ourselves with either a spare chunk of time, or we suddenly realise we need to share that new sale, and the giveaway on our blog, and a guest post... and we send it all out at once.

A good way to avoid doing this is to write down a schedule, as above, or, if you're on twitter, use an app like Buffer. This allows you to plug in all of your tweets at once, while you think of them, and it does the job of sending them out throughout the day (and night, don't forget, online business is a 24-hour world!) for you!

8. Don't limit yourself to your niche
Don't hesitate to build connections to people outside of your niche! Sure, for some of us, other crafters are our target market, but I'd reckon that for most of us our target market is much broader than that. The broader your network, the more chances you have to connect with people who will love (and want to buy) what we make.
9. Be yourself
Don't be an emotionless robot. The days of impersonal business are behind us - especially in the crafty scene. Let your personality shine through - don't be afraid to talk about your life as well as your work. People want to connect with other people, not brands.

10. Have fun!
Social media is just that - a way for us to connect and be sociable! If you, like me, work from home, it can get a bit isolating.
Social media is a tool for business, sure, but it's also a way for us to make friends, connect with colleagues, and just have a bit of fun! While keeping in mind that everything you say reflects on your business, don't be afraid to relax and enjoy connecting with other people. Your sanity will thank you.

Facebook Tips & Tricks - Creating an Event

Events on Facebook are fantastic if you are having a sale or would like to invite your fans to your next market. It is an easy way to connect with a lot of people and also update them on the sale or market.

How to create and event:

· Go to use news feed and on the left underneath ‘favourites’ click ‘events’.

· The events page will open and at the top click the ‘create event’ button.

· You then have a number of options to choose from including add event photo, event name, start and end time, date, place. Fill out all of the information and don’t forget to add a photo. You can add the link to your business page in the description.

· Select guests to invite.

· Once you are finished click ‘create event’.

· You can edit or view your event by searching for it in the events tab on the left of your news feed.

· Go to your event.

· Click the button that looks like a little cog on the top right hand side of your event.

· You will see some useful options like message guests and share event.

· Share event gives you options! A pop up window will appear. Click the drop down menu next to share. You can select to post on your wall, on your page, on a friend’s wall, in a group or in a private message. Choose one of these options.

· You can also right on the wall of the event to update and talk to guests.

Are you looking for somewhere funky to 'get your craft on' in 2012? Then you may be interested in joining in all of the crafty fun that goes on at Brisbane Brown Owls. Organised by two of Brisbane's craftiest ladies, Rebecca from edward & lilly and Sam from Jetta's Nest this is one crafty group you will want to be a part of!

Brown Owls meet once a month in various locations throughout Brisbane for a cuppa, a crafty chat and of course to learn a new crafty skill! All are welcome, from beginner crafters to those who are more advanced. The Owls love to meet like minded crafty souls no matter what their skill level!

Membership: membership is FREE (Yay!), however, there may be one-off costs associated with special craft-a-long projects. The cost will cover materials etc. You can join at any time during the year by simply emailing Rebecca and Sam at brisbanebrownowls@gmail.com.

Monthly Projects: A lot of people have their own crafty project to bring along to each meet but for those who don't or for those who would like to learn something new there will be an organised craft-along project to participate in each month. Facebook Tips & Tricks - Recommendations

Recommendations: Why some pages have them and why others don’t.

Page recommendations are a feature for business pages on fb which has been recently upgraded. If a business has a physical address, when you like the page a pop up window will ask you to write a recommendation. This feature is to share new and exciting places with your friends as part of fb working to connect users with local businesses. You also have the option to share your recommendation amongst friends or make it public. Page Admins have the option to show or hide particular recommendations.

Using beautiful flowers, french vintage inspired laces and a new range of braids with a real focus on pearls, organza sheer netting and lots of others frillies ! No sewing required. Your limit is your imagination and your hot glue gun! These workshops last year inspired 30 women to go onto making the most beautiful items for themselves and loved ones.

Crafty Coasters

Are you a craft-a-holic living on the Gold Coast? Then you may be interested in joining this sweet Gold Coast based craft group called 'Crafty Coasters'.

Crafty Coasters was started in early 2010 by a small group of makers who had met online via the DUST and BrisStyle Etsy Street teams. Whilst many group members sell their work the focus of the group is primarily social - they share techniques, share information about where to source supplies, and encourage one another. Members bring their own project to meet-ups or just come along for a chat. Everyone is welcome, whatever their favoured craft or skill level.

Crafty Coasters meets twice per month. Evening meet-ups are held on the second Tuesday of the month from 6:30pm at the Girl Guide Hut, 4 Margaret St Southport. Daytime meet-up times and venues vary but are generally held mid-morning on a weekday at a local cafe. A few times a year they hold meet-ups to learn a new skill.

Bambino Bazaar has a brand new business course starting on Tue 3rd January for junior creative entrepreneurs! With so much positive feedback their previous courses, we would like help spread the word for them far and wide.

Creative spirits soared last Friday night higher than the enormous Christmas Tree in King George square as the crowds swelled throughout the market stalls at it's base.

We always shriek with delight when we hear of a new handmade retail outlet opening in crafty Brisbane. This week we were so thrilled to catch up with Sasha, owner of Fabric Fusion to discuss all things fabric, craft and handmade.

Tell us a little about your background and what path led you to open Fabric Fusion?

I have loved fabrics and creating for as long as I can remember, and when I did a ‘learn to quilt’ class in my early 20’s, the obsession was revived. When Brad and I started our little family, I couldn’t make my career as a lawyer work with how we wanted to raise our kids, so I became a stay at home mum. That led to lots of playing with fabric, starting an Etsy shop, buying fabrics in larger quantities, and the rest is history! Fabric Fusion opened as an online fabric shop in September 2009, and we opened our shopfront retail store in North Queensland, in July 2010. Since then a transfer has brought us (and all the fabrics and craftiness) to Brisbane, which we love J

Tell us what Fabric Fusion is all about?

I wanted to start a craft and handmade shop that didn’t feel like a shop – it should feel like you are coming to visit me in my craft room, can sit down, have a cuppa and a chat and stay as long as you like. We aim to support Australian fabric designers and handmade artisans, and try to feature as much local product in store, both by way of supplies and handmade items, as possible.

Where did the name Fabric Fusion come from?

Brad and I tossed around names for weeks, but I kept coming back to Fabric Fusion. It really feels like the right fit for our concept – fresh, interesting, different, a mix of old and new – not your average craft and handmade shop!

How does Fabric Fusion support independent artists and crafters and/or the handmade community?

From the start of our retail store journey, we have always had space in the shop for local artisans to display and sell their beautiful handmade items. As a maker and designer myself, I know how difficult it can be to bring your product to your target market – we aim to provide an avenue for creators to bring their items to an audience of people who are passionate about handmade. We have display space for rent, and also do wholesale orders with some fabulous handmade artisans around the country J

How can local designers and crafters get involved with Fabric Fusion?

In so many ways!

We have display space for rent, to showcase local handmade artists. This includes in-store and window front feature spaces. We love to have a little written ‘blurb’ about the creator and their inspiration, to display with the items, to help buyers know the time and expertise that goes into each piece.

As relative newbies in town, we are also seeking anyone who would be interested in conducting classes and workshops in our little crafty space.

Does Fabric Fusion have any exciting upcoming events?

2012 is going to be a big year for us – in the pipeline are:

ideas for workshops and classes;
we are starting a Crafty Mums Group, where Mums are welcome to bring along their kids for an organised activity while you get some crafting done (Wednesdays at 10.00am);
'meet the artisans' in-store sessions, with local handmade creators;
and perhaps a Grand Opening in the New Year - any excuse for a glass of champagne.

What does a typical day at work involve for you?

With 2 young children, there is usually one little ‘helper’ at the shop with me! We open at 9.30am, and between chatting and serving customers, displaying new items that arrive, and some more chatting, I create and fill orders for my own design label, Buster Boo, making fabric baby shoes and kids sun hats. Cutting, ironing, sewing, labelling etc. Some games of hide and seek and pushing trucks around in our back area with Mr 2, then back to work! Close up at 5.00pm and go home to the usual family life!

How do you promote Fabric Fusion?

We have a Facebook page and a monthly e-newsletter that currenlty goes out to over 500 subscribers. We feature a handmade artisan in each newsletter, as well as what's new in store, upcoming classes etc.

We also do local and inter-suburb advertising, and are looking at local newspaper advertising.

What is your favourite item in the shop at the moment?

I just received a delivery of beautiful items from the lovely Rachel of Miss Isa. The paper flowers are my absolute favourite at the moment. Closely followed by the owl softie that my 4 year old daughter filled with fiber-fill today!

What’s in store for Fabric Fusion in 2011 and beyond?

Crafting world domination! No, seriously, we would like to consolidate our place as a niche market for beautiful crafting supplies, Australian fabric designers and handmade artisans, in Brisbane. I want to meet as many local creators as possible - hearing people's stories and learning from them is such a rich opportunity.

I already have my eye on where the next outlet of Fabric Fusion will open up - hopefully in 2014!

Business-wise, the website will be expanded and freshened, to provide creators an online retail outlet for their items as well as the in-person retail store.

And a whole lot more fabric!

Etsy Christmas Craft Party

Last Thursday many Brisstyle members attended the Etsy Christmas Craft Party hosted at Piece Together in Wooloongabba. It was a fantastic night where everyone bought along a plate, teapot, mug or other ceramic find to decorate with Pebeo's range of porcelain markers. Whenever we get together the crafty ideas flow freely and some amazing designs were created. Here are some photos from the night.

BrisStyle Inc. recently had its first AGM and Christmas Party. It was the perfect occassion to celebrate all that BrisStyle achieved in the 2010-2011 financial year, to thank our committee members who work tirelessly behind the scenes to promote and advocate for the indie handmade community in Brisbane and beyond and to welcome our new committee members who are excited by the challenge to take the organisation to the next level in the coming year.

Our fabulous group which came from such humble beginnings of 12 Etsy sellers meeting up for coffee now boasts 180 members and is recognised as a major destination in South East Qld for advice, information and resources for the indie craft movement and more recently as a key player in the arts and cultural environment in Brisbane and beyond.

Crafty Folk: Gilded Goldfish

Welcome to the latest edition in our Crafty Folk series. This week we caught up with Emmaline Lamond from Gilded Goldfish.

How would you describe your work?
I am a passionate creative type with an insatiable compulsion to embellish everything I make. I just cant help it, in my eyes everything looks better with beautiful origami paper, cute vintage buttons or a piece of lovely fabric added to one of my prints or cards, I tell myself this is a good thing as it means all my work is one of a kind, and whilst this is true, I really just do it because I love colourful sparkly things…oh and of course shopping for colourful sparkly things!

How did your Etsy shop come into being?
I signed up to Esty long before I set up a shop, one of my friends kept telling me I had to start selling on there, I kept saying I would but didn’t. Eventually I got myself in order, brought a nice camera, started taking photos of my prints and well you know how the rest goes…my Etsy shop was born.

Who or What inspires you?
I can be inspired by just about anything, but I love the beautiful patterns that nature makes, I’m always taking photos of tree bark, close up flower petals, pretty leaves, though this inspiration doesn’t necessarily translate into my work. I also absolutely love the Art Nouveau and Art Deco art styles, I recently discovered a great new artist Tamara Lempicka, an amazing Art Deco painter, there is something so powerful about the figures she paints.

Do you ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ as part of your creative process? If yes, how is your art / craft eco-friendly?
My boyfriend call me Mrs Magpie, I love collecting things, I’m not picky either, I accumulate all sorts of wonderful things, last time I went to an antiques fair I left with a new bracelet, a monk shaped cookie jar, an old brass school bell, vintage cloth oh the list goes on! In an effort to reduce this ever growing eclectic collection I always try to incorporate found objects into my work, be it vintage buttons, fabric, ribbon and ric rac to embellish my hand printed cards or lovingly refurbishing old picture frames to house my prints.

Can you describe your studio / work area?
I live in a tiny two bedroom apartment, I am lucky enough to be able to use one of the two rooms as a studio, its small, I have no storage space but its all mine! I often work in the company of my very sweet curly haired La Perm cat, Shaggy he’s great company and always listen to everything I have to say. But to be more specific, I have a large table on which I sew, draw, print and generally daydream. I am surrounded by pictures of family and friends, projects just started and some they may never be finished- but pretty much anything I could need is only an arms reach away.

What is your favorite thing in the shop at the moment?
I love me new Dear print, I just think he is so sweet, I enjoyed the whole creative process for him from start to finish.

Handmade Highstreet is a brand spankin' new indie marketplace in Brisbane! This week we were lucky enough to catch up with part owner, Kath Chown, in the lead up to their grand store opening on December 12.

Tell us a little about your background and what path led you to open Handmade Highstreet?
The owners of this shop are myself (Kath Chown), Benjamin Williams and Ryan deVeau.

I am a member of BrisStyle and have my own Etsy store called bunnyhornet. I mainly make polymer clay accessories which I sell weekly at the Davies Park West End Markets. I have always wanted to own a shop after working in retail for over 10 years but felt that the bigger businesses were choking out the independent shops and making it impossible to make a living. Since I have been investigating the notion of starting this handmade store and the idea of sub-letting space for artisans, I have found that so many people in our community want this kind of shop in their area. These are the people who are disenchanted with large corporations and want to directly support their local area and businesses.

Benjamin works in disability services and has an education in the dramatic arts. He has been the President of a small university theatre company called Underground Productions and this is where his seed of creativity was born. He has been desperate to begin his dream career of furniture restoration ever since we met and we plan to make this an avenue which he can explore by selling his creations through the store.

Ryan studied Art at university and was a successful graduate. His love of drawing and watercolour has been hiding behind his various jobs in the administration and banking sectors. His creative talent needed an outlet and this store can help him to display his amazing works.

Our team is dedicated to treating our contributors with respect and providing them with a space where they can be proud to display their work. We want every customer to feel like there are strong values residing in the management of the store. This means that we look after our own and provide a happy place to co-operate.

Tell us what Handmade Highstreet is all about?
We are aiming to give independent handmade artisans a marketplace in which to display their goods without the need to sit at a market all day. Keeping rent low will be a focus so that the contributor can make the most of their sales and profit. After the agreed rent is deducted from their sales, they will receive 100% of the remaining money.

We also have plans for a tea service which will showcase the hand-blended and ethically sourced Herbal Teas of KT Teas by my friend Kate Maxwell.

Where did the name Handmade Highstreet come from? When I chose the name for my own Etsy store, bunnyhornet, I just chose something which sounded quirky and fun. People have since told me that they weren't sure what my business was as they couldn't work it out from the name! So when we were talking about the name for this store, I wanted it to convey exactly what would be sold there. Hence Handmade Highstreet sounded catchy and true to our products. I asked each of my friends to listen to the name once and then the next time I saw them I asked if they remembered it - and they all did!

How does Handmade Highstreet support independent artists and crafters and/or the handmade community?
We believe in handmade, having artisans among us. We also believe that small business has a place in modern society even though it sometimes feels like big corporations and businesses have the market-share in retail. We would love to give like minded people the opportunity to support local artists. We would like customers to be able to see and touch all the items in store and educate them on the makers and their process.

Giving handmade artisans a viable option for selling and customers a place in which to appreciate the complexities and impressive skills which these artisans display is paramount.

How can local designers and crafters get involved with Handmade Highstreet?
We can't get enough of Brisbane and Queensland crafts and art. There is so much talent here and we want to nurture it! So we would love anyone who has the desire to sell their beautiful wares to contact us at handmadehighstreet@mail.com.

Does Handmade Highstreet have any exciting upcoming events?
Our Grand Opening is on the 12th December and we will be hosting an evening soiree at the shop from 4-7pm with a glass of free bubbly and a chance to see the amazing and talented crafts of Brisbane's finest!

What does a typical day at work involve for you?
At the moment we spend 90% of our working hours on our email accounts liasing with our contributors to ensure we have a full-to-the brim shop when we open! We have also been busy restoring old furniture which will house the beautiful wares supplied by our contributors.

When we open we hope to give customers as much opportunity to shop instore as possible with extended and weekend opening hours. Our aim is to revitalise the area of Annerley in which we are situated and bring the masses of wonderful residents back to our high street.

How do you promote Handmade Highstreet?
Currently we promote through our Facebook page, Twitter account (@handmadehighst), Blog and through attending markets in the Brisbane area.

We are having a fancy-schamncy webpage designed by a good friend and when that is up and running, we hope to use this as a great tool for spreading the word.

What is your favourite item in the shop at the moment?
We are so excited to have some amazing and talented artisans onboard; Aqua Door Designs, Has Bean, Kiss My Patootie, Hermia's Wishes Paperia, Off the Hook, Mini Mayhem and Wind and Water Designs just to name a few!

What’s in store for Handmade Highstreet in 2012 and beyond?
We hope that Handmade Highstreet will be a busy and well-patronised small business.

Eventually we aim to offer space for small workshops, knitting circles and meetings. It is our hope that we can make a space which our community can be proud of and which is vital and vibrant!

Gourmet Indies!

This Saturday's BrisStyle Indie Designer Market is set to be a festive occasion for all the family. Gorgeous handmade wares will be in abundance, the St. Rita's Roving Choir will be adding some seasonal tunes to the mix and your tastebuds will be treated to a selection of gourment indie delights.

Enticing Icing will be sure to impress all of the sweet tooth peeps amongst us. Swing by for a delicious home baked Vanilla or Chocolate Cupcake, Chocolate Crackle or Biscuit.

Happy Little Dumplings will be onsite with their tastebud tantalising handmade dumplings made from only the freshest ingredients. You can view their Market Menu here.

And last but definitely NOT least, for all those coffee addicts out there pop by and visit the folk from Black Star Cold Pressed Coffee. The perfect caffeine fix for a Brisbane summer! They produce a unique and locally made cold-pressed coffee which is brewed for 12 hours, and then bottled and labeled by hand. Black Star Cold Pressed Coffee uses organic ingredients and locally roasted fair trade beans from their roastery at Black Star Cafe, West End. There are three fabulous flavours: Full Creamy, Soy Deluxe and Total Black. Their point of difference is that their coffee is brewed slowly at room temperature and served chilled in a bottle. Sweet!
